Korean BBQ etiquette is mostly an operating sequence: confirm the order, learn who controls the grill, keep raw-meat tools separate, share the table without blocking others, and ask before changing heat or adding food. It is not a test of memorized gestures. Restaurant rules and staffing differ by branch.

Use this page as the meal-flow hub
| Question | Use this page | Use another guide |
|---|---|---|
| How the table normally moves | Ordering to grilling, sharing, finishing and paying | Exact units and bill math use the ordering guide |
| Who cooks | Read staff behavior and ask once | Do not assume self-grilling |
| Allergy or dietary risk | Pause and identify the responsible person | Use the allergy safety hub and Korean card |
| Price uncertainty | Confirm displayed unit and minimum | Use the ordering transaction guide |
Before the first order
- Read whether the price is per serving, set or person.
- Ask the minimum order for this table and whether different meats can be combined.
- Confirm charcoal, gas or another heat source only if it matters to you.
- Tell staff about allergies before utensils or side dishes arrive.
- Ask whether staff will grill or whether guests should do it.
Let staff establish the grill routine
Some restaurants cook every piece; others start the first batch and leave the rest to guests. Watch whether staff place meat, adjust the hood, change the grill plate or return at intervals. Ask “Do you cook it, or should we?” before moving tongs or heat controls.
Separate raw and cooked tools
| Item | Practical rule | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Raw-meat tongs | Keep with uncooked meat | Avoid moving raw juices to ready food |
| Scissors | Use for the meat or purpose staff indicates | A shared tool may already have a defined role |
| Eating chopsticks | Do not use to handle raw meat | Personal eating tools are not raw-meat tools |
| Serving utensils | Return to the shared dish | Other diners need a clean common tool |
Share space, not every preference
Side dishes are commonly shared, but each restaurant decides refills and self-service. Take a small amount, leave room around the grill, and ask before moving another diner’s meat or changing the heat. A call button is a normal way to request service where one is provided.
When the grill plate changes
Staff may change a plate when residue builds up or when the next meat needs a different surface. Do not treat a plate change as an allergy-safe reset: tongs, scissors, marinades, vents and work areas may still be shared.
Finishing dishes are a new order
Stew, cold noodles, rice or fried rice can be ordered during or after meat. They have their own price, ingredients and preparation. Confirm before staff use the grill or leftover sauce for a finishing dish.
Dining alone
Some restaurants accept solo diners and some apply a two-serving minimum. Ask before waiting for a table: “Can one person dine, and what is the minimum order?” A single diner should not assume that one displayed serving is sufficient.
Smoke, bags and coats
Use storage seats or bags when offered, keep belongings away from burners and aisles, and tell staff if smoke extraction is not working. Do not adjust a hood or gas control you do not understand.
What is not required
You do not need to copy drinking rituals, over-order to impress the table or tip simply because the meal is Korean BBQ. VISITKOREA says tipping is not required or expected in Korea; unusual service charges or reservation deposits should still be checked on the menu or booking.
A calm first five minutes
- Choose one person to speak for the order.
- Confirm cut, serving unit, quantity and minimum.
- Ask who cooks.
- Assign raw tongs and eating tools.
- Keep the allergy question separate and wait for a verified answer.
Common failures
Everyone starts moving the meat
Pause and decide one grill handler unless staff are cooking. This reduces dropped food, mixed tools and contradictory doneness decisions.
A refill is assumed free
Point to the item and ask. Basic side dishes may be refillable, while meat, drinks, special sides and finishing dishes are separate orders.
The group keeps eating while a risk is unclear
Etiquette never outranks safety. Stop that person’s meal decision and use the food-allergy safety guide.
Final check before leaving
Confirm all ordered quantities, drinks and finishing dishes on the bill. Collect belongings from storage seats, and do not leave medication, a phone or an allergy card under the table.
