Can You Take an E-Scooter or E-Bike on KTX After July 2026?

For a KORAIL-operated KTX trip, do not plan to bring a lithium-powered electric scooter or e-bike aboard. KORAIL’s published restriction, effective July 1, 2026, covers personal-mobility devices as a class. The over-160Wh threshold concerns a separate portable-battery category; it is not permission for a smaller e-bike. Identify your item and operator before arranging transport.

Read the device category before the battery number

The official KORAIL announcement restricts lithium-powered personal-mobility devices, including e-scooters and e-bikes, plus portable large lithium batteries above 160Wh. It excepts powered wheelchairs and medical scooters and excludes ordinary small-battery phones, laptops and power banks from this announced restriction.

Folding or bagging a powered bicycle does not change its device class. The notice does not establish a battery-removal workaround. If you cannot classify the item, give KORAIL its model and battery rating and ask before relying on the journey. For an excepted medical device, also confirm your specific train’s boarding arrangements; the category exception alone does not answer that practical question.

Resolve the item before reaching the gate

The announcement covers KORAIL trains including KTX, ITX-Saemaeul and Mugunghwa. Its metropolitan services in the Seoul area, Daegyeong and Donghae also prohibit covered items from station entry. Check the booked operator: this notice does not establish another operator’s rule.

If your device is covered, separate the passenger trip from transporting the device. Leave it at a place that has agreed to keep it, or change the journey only after the other operator confirms acceptance of the exact item. Do not assume a station locker, courier or coach accepts a lithium device; ask that provider before paying or leaving it there. If you already bought a rail ticket, check your fare’s change or cancellation terms separately—the carriage notice does not grant a special refund.

KORAIL’s published rule checked October 5, 2026 KST. No device boarding or storage service was tested.
