Do not buy extra baggage from weight alone. Start with your category in Korean Air’s special-baggage guide.
Find the rule for the item you are actually packing
Sports-equipment maxima are 32 kg per item and 292 cm in length + width + height. These are acceptance ceilings. Oversize fees above 158 cm have category exceptions; free allowance is separate.
| Equipment | Rule and packing point to confirm |
|---|---|
| Golf, skis or snowboard | International bag-pair exception. Hard case for golf; protective bag for skis or snowboard. |
| Bicycle without a motor | One item; padded hard case, secured handle, pedals removed. |
| Surfboard or wakeboard | Per bag; dedicated bag, fins removed; international oversize exception up to 292 cm. |
| Racket or skateboard | One item under standard rules; oversize above 158 cm. |
Korean Air international Economy: one golf or ski/snowboard bag plus one ordinary bag counts as one piece up to 23 kg combined; above 23 through 32 kg, one piece plus an overweight fee; over 32 kg, two pieces. This counting does not raise each bag’s acceptance limit. Other classes, domestic and codeshare flights need their own rule check.
Build the question before asking for a fee
Put each item in the case or bag you intend to use, then measure the outside dimensions and weigh every bag separately. Write down the operating airline and every flight segment. A marketing name such as “ski bag” or “bike case” does not settle how a packed item will be counted. If it has a motor or battery, resolve the airline’s applicable dangerous-goods or mobility-aid rules before using the ordinary bicycle row.
Ask the operating airline to confirm the equipment category, whether a special counting exception applies on each segment, the accepted packing, and the charge after the rest of the checked baggage is included. Save the response with the itinerary. A prepaid excess-baggage fee does not by itself prove that the case, dimensions, packing, or equipment will be accepted at check-in.
Use the equipment-specific route when this is not sports baggage
A musical instrument or powered mobility aid follows a different branch of the same airline guide. For a cello, compare a separately booked seat with a protected checked case in the Korean Air cello guide. For a powered wheelchair, start with its measurements, battery type, and aircraft fit in the powered-wheelchair guide.
If the airline cannot confirm your packed sports item for every segment, do not arrive assuming an airport fee will solve the problem. Ask what case or packing would be acceptable, or arrange another transport plan before paying. Keep the airline’s answer tied to the exact route and operating carrier.
