Check the original account’s membership status before trying another payment. A card alert, a WOW status screen, and a cancellation confirmation answer different questions. Save all three if they disagree. Starting a new account will not resolve a charge associated with the old one.
Open My Coupang → WOW Membership, as directed in Coupang’s official WOW FAQ. Compare the charge date, next billing date, payment method and benefit activity. Do you want to keep the membership, stop future renewal, or recover a fee already charged? State that clearly when contacting support; those are different requests.
Match the account state to the remedy
Coupang’s FAQ describes these rules:
- Recurring charge: WOW bills monthly through Coupay, even without a product order.
- Unused paid month: cancellation starts a membership-fee refund. The stated processing period is up to seven days, or 14 for some overseas cards.
- Benefit already used: the current month’s fee is not refunded; benefits continue until the scheduled end.
- Free trial: requested cancellation takes effect at trial end. Otherwise, billing starts when the trial ends.
- Failed renewal: benefits may be suspended. Daily retries can continue for up to 30 days; successful payment restarts membership and resets the billing date. Continued failure ends membership.
Use these distinctions to examine your own records. For example, a failed-payment message followed by a later charge could be a successful retry, rather than a second membership. Ask support to match the charge to the membership period before treating it as a duplicate. Conversely, a cancellation request with no completion result is not evidence that renewal stopped.
Cancel deliberately, or fix payment deliberately
The FAQ’s cancellation route is My Coupang → WOW Membership → Cancel. Coupang Play Pass subscribers must also cancel Pass, either with WOW or in the Play app. Bank maintenance can interrupt cancellation.
After submitting, reopen the membership page and retain its end date or cancellation result. If the screen errors, record when and where it stopped; ask support whether the request completed before relying on it. Removing a card is an uncertain way to stop a subscription because another registered payment method or a later retry may succeed.
If you want to keep WOW, ask the issuer about the failed transaction and inspect the payment methods in the existing account. Do not add several cards or repeat charges while the earlier result is unclear. A newly added foreign card is not a guaranteed solution; our foreign-card troubleshooting guide separates merchant and issuer problems.
For an expected refund, keep the original charge and cancellation reference together. Ask Coupang for its refund status, then use that reference with the issuer if the merchant and card records disagree. The published processing period cannot establish your individual posting date.
When the old account cannot be opened
Coupang’s official customer center lists 1577-7011, a paid customer-service number operating 24 hours in Korea. Its public page does not confirm overseas dialing or English-language handling. An inaccessible account is therefore a reason to contact support, not to create another membership or repeatedly attempt Korean phone verification.
Have the charge date and amount, possible account identifiers, and the card’s last four digits available. Ask how to identify the original membership and stop renewal or investigate the fee. Do not send a password, verification code or full card number in an ordinary message. If that support route cannot be reached from your location, contact the card issuer through its trusted app or the number on the card about the recurring charge and available account-specific options; an issuer inquiry is separate from Coupang’s membership cancellation.
