Read the product name and exact balance before traveling to a refund point. The current Korea Tourism Organization guide gives different routes for Tmoney, EZL, WOWPASS and Climate Card. It does not make every convenience store, kiosk or headquarters counter interchangeable.
Which product and balance do you actually have?
Open the card or app record and write down the product name and balance. Keep a WOWPASS main balance separate from any transit-card function on the same physical card. A logo on the plastic is not enough to decide which balance a kiosk will return.
The current KTO transportation-card guide gives these routes:
- Tmoney: amounts over KRW 50,000 go to Tmoney Town near Seoul Station Exit 10; smaller amounts go to convenience stores. The page does not resolve exactly KRW 50,000, so confirm that boundary before traveling.
- EZL: convenience-store refunds are stated only for amounts under KRW 20,000. Exactly KRW 20,000 is not resolved on the page. Confirm the route instead of treating “under” as “up to.”
- WOWPASS: the stated remaining balance can be withdrawn as Korean-won cash at a WOWPASS kiosk. That sentence does not establish that the kiosk refunds a separate embedded Tmoney balance.
- Climate Card: the guide directs a foreigner without a Korean bank account to Tmoney headquarters for a refund.
Is the refund trip worth the remaining time?
Before leaving for an outlet, confirm its current hours, whether that location handles the exact product and amount, any fee, required identification, and whether cash or another payout method is available. The KTO route is a starting point, not confirmation that a particular counter is open or that the refund will succeed.
Compare the expected net refund with transport cost and the time needed to reach the outlet and then the airport. Do not risk a departure merely to recover a small balance. KTO recommends using a Climate Card balance before departure, but count only travel you already planned; do not add unnecessary trips solely to empty the card.
What if the boundary or outlet remains unclear?
For exactly KRW 50,000 on Tmoney or KRW 20,000 on EZL, ask the issuer which side of the route applies. Preserve the card, balance screen, top-up or purchase record, and the outlet’s refusal or error. Do not add more value to make a test, and do not assume an online bank refund avoids the same identity or account requirements.
For product-specific preparation, use the Tmoney visitor guide or WOWPASS guide. If an EZL balance remains after departure, the overseas EZL refund route is a separate process rather than proof that a Korean outlet should pay it now.
If no confirmed route fits the remaining time, keep the card and evidence and ask the issuer whether a later refund or retaining the value is available for your product. Neither is automatic. Give the airport journey priority over an unconfirmed refund trip.
