Chilgung Booking for Foreign Visitors: Phone Reservations and the Three-Person Rule

Chilgung no longer operates as a place where you can simply arrive for an independent visit. Its official notice moved visits to reserved guided sessions and directs foreign visitors to book by phone. If the Korean online booking form asks for identity verification you cannot complete, use the stated Chilgung or Gyeongbokgung information number. A failed online login is not evidence that foreign visitors cannot visit.

Check the live slot and group before making a travel plan

The current reservation listing names “칠궁 해설 관람(제한 관람)” — Chilgung guided, restricted viewing — and shows a window from nine days to three days before the desired visit. It also says the tour proceeds only with at least three reserved people. This is a material change from the original January notice, which said seven days to one day and allowed a one-person booking. The change effective March 11, 2026 is the relevant source for the current window and group rule.

If you are traveling alone or as a pair, ask whether the requested session already has enough people and when a shortfall would be confirmed. The March notice says a session with fewer than three may be cancelled with a message by the day before. A phone request is not a promise the tour will run. Recheck the official listing for your date and any special closure notice before changing other bookings.

Call with the details the office requests

The foreign-visitor instruction lists Chilgung 02-734-7720 and Gyeongbokgung information 02-3700-3900. It asks for your name, nationality and passport number during booking, and requires the passport on the visit day for identity matching. Give those details only through the official phone route, not in a public comment or an unofficial intermediary’s form. The notice does not promise a particular phone language, a place in any session or an exemption from the group rule.

On the call, ask for the visit date and session time, number of people, whether the booking is confirmed or still dependent on minimum attendance, and how you will hear of a change. Write down what the office actually confirms. If your mobile plan cannot make calls, arrange access to a telephone; for example, ask your accommodation whether it can help place the call during the booking window. If language is the obstacle, ask a person you trust to help interpret the conversation while you provide your own passport details. Neither assistance option guarantees a reservation, and the published notice does not establish an English-speaking phone service.

For example, two visitors see a free online place but cannot pass the Korean identity step. The workable next move is a call during the published booking window with both passports’ details, asking if the session has another participant. Even if the office accepts the request, they should not treat it as an unconditional tour until the session and group are confirmed. On the day, bring the same passports used for booking and check the official notice for any closure or timing change.
