Before requesting a refund for a Korean Air ticket paid with a gift card, check how much of the ticket used that card and whether it is still valid. Korean Air’s gift-card guidance sends the gift-card-funded refund back to the same gift card, rather than turning it into cash. If that card has expired when the ticket refund is requested, Korean Air says the gift-card-funded portion is not returned and is lost. A second payment method on the order does not convert the gift-card portion into a refund to that method.
Which value are you trying to recover?
Look at the ticket receipt and the gift card’s current expiry before taking a cancellation action. Mark the amount paid by gift card, any amount paid another way, and the fee shown under your ticket conditions. Korean Air says refund fees and other costs consume the gift-card-paid portion first. Ask the ticket issuer to explain the payment portions and current card status before submitting a cancellation or refund request; do not assume the whole original ticket price comes back as spendable value.
If the gift card remains valid, the published guidance describes a three-to-five-business-day return to that card for the gift-funded ticket or ancillary-service refund. That is a processing guide, not proof that your particular request has completed. Check the actual refund result and the card balance before relying on the returned value. If the card is already expired, ask the issuer to explain the treatment of any amount paid by another method, without assuming a waiver or reversal of the published gift-card loss. Do not postpone a ticket decision past its own cancellation deadline merely to resolve the gift card question.
Is the remaining gift-card balance refundable as cash?
That is a separate request, not the ticket cancellation refund. Korean Air’s conditions allow a remaining-balance claim only when at least 60% of the card’s issued value has been used, the request is made before expiry, and the card was not provided free through a promotion or event. The published recipient is the registered member’s own Korean bank account. These conditions do not establish a route to a foreign account or someone else’s account. Do not share a card code, PIN or another person’s banking details to work around them.
If the account, balance or payment split is unclear, use the operator contact listed in the official gift-card guide to ask which request you need. It lists Galaxia Moneytree at 1566-0123, weekdays 09:00–17:00 KST, with Korean-language service. Use it for a gift-card inquiry. If Korean-language calling is the barrier, arrange language help for that contact; the guide does not establish English support, a written application alternative or a foreign-account cash-out route. Language help does not change whose account may receive the balance.
Before using an online calculation request just to compare amounts, read the near-departure refund calculation warning.
