In Korea, do not add a tip automatically. First determine what the exact charge is: listed price, tax-inclusive total, service or facility fee, delivery or booking fee, mandatory group charge, optional gratuity, or a payment-screen prompt. Pay the bill you accepted; add money only when you understand that it is genuinely optional.

What official tourism guidance actually says
VISITKOREA’s restaurant guidance states that tipping is not required or expected in Korean restaurants. VISITKOREA’s current taxi page says most taxis use a taximeter and do not require tips. These statements support a no-automatic-tip default for those transactions; they do not erase a separately disclosed fee in a hotel, tour, reservation or premium service.
No tip does not mean no extra charge
A bill can legitimately include an item you selected, delivery, booking, room service, corkage, facility use, late cancellation or another disclosed fee. Do not label every extra line a tip. Match the line to the menu, booking or service terms, then ask about anything unmatched before paying.
A six-step payment check
- Match business and branch.
- Match items, quantities and listed price.
- Identify tax, service, booking, delivery or facility lines by label.
- Confirm discount, deposit and prepaid amount.
- Identify whether any gratuity prompt is optional and can be skipped.
- Pay once and keep the receipt or app record.
Restaurant and cafe bills
Pay the displayed total unless the bill is wrong. Free water or side-dish refills described by a restaurant do not imply every refill or menu add-on is free. A jar at a counter may be optional; it does not change the bill. If staff refuse cash left behind, do not pressure them to accept it as a cultural gesture.
Taxi fare and change
Use the meter or app fare and verify toll, late-night, intercity or booking additions when applicable. Rounding because you do not want coins is your choice, not a required percentage. Before authorizing a second card payment, check whether the first attempt succeeded. A driver helping with luggage does not automatically create an undisclosed tip obligation.
Hotel bill
Separate room rate, tax, breakfast, minibar, room service, laundry, facility, deposit and authorization hold. A service charge printed in the booking or folio is not the same as an optional cash tip, and an authorization hold is not necessarily a final charge. Ask the hotel to identify the line before adding another payment.
Tours and private guides
Read the booking page for inclusions, operator policy and any optional gratuity note. Internationally marketed tours may address tipping differently from ordinary domestic restaurant or taxi transactions. Do not import a percentage from another country when the provider has given no such term, and do not ignore a fee you expressly accepted.
Payment-terminal prompts
A foreign-language interface or internationally configured terminal may display percentages. Read the label and look for no-tip, skip or custom options. Do not assume a prompt is required merely because the screen blocks progress; ask staff what it represents. Never let another person choose an amount while hiding the final total.

When a tip is genuinely optional
If you knowingly choose to thank someone with an optional amount, keep it voluntary, proportionate and direct. Do not tell companions that it is required, add it to someone else’s card, or expect special treatment. The transaction should still be complete if you choose zero.
When the bill looks wrong
- Do not pay a second time while the first transaction is unresolved.
- Circle or point to the exact line, item or quantity.
- Show the menu, booking or app record that conflicts with it.
- Ask whether it is a fee, deposit, authorization, gratuity or duplicate.
- Keep the final corrected receipt and card notification.
