Only VisitKorea’s Halal Certified category indicates certification by an accredited halal certification body. Self-certified, Muslim Friendly and Pork Free mean different things, and none should be treated as proof for every dish. Check the exact branch, category and pictograms, then confirm the dish, meat, broth, sauce, cooking alcohol and shared cookware before you decide.

Start with the VisitKorea category, not a map pin or review
Open the Korea Tourism Organization’s Muslim-friendly travel page before relying on a social post, old PDF or map review. KTO groups selected restaurants into four categories and displays separate pictograms for details such as an available halal menu, an alcohol-free setting or a halal menu that requires advance reservation.
A listing is a starting record, not a meal-level verdict. Match the restaurant name, branch, address and phone number to the place you will visit. If the listing has a date, record it. If it does not, write down the day you checked and call the branch.
The four labels do not promise the same thing

KTO also warns that hotel restaurants or buffets categorized as Muslim Friendly may still serve dishes containing pork. Pork-free does not establish that other meat is halal, that alcohol is absent, or that cookware is separate.
Read the pictograms separately from the category
VisitKorea uses five detail pictograms: Muslim owner/chef, Halal menu available, Reservation required for Halal menu, Alcohol-free, and Pork-free. Record every pictogram that appears, but do not combine several icons into a certification claim.
- A Muslim owner or chef icon identifies a person-related detail; it is not a certificate number.
- A halal-menu icon does not tell you that every item on the menu is halal.
- A reservation icon means you should contact the branch before arriving.
- Alcohol-free and pork-free are separate signals. Do not infer one from the other.
Confirm the branch and exact dish on the day you visit
- Save the official listing URL. A screenshot without the URL or check date is hard to recheck later.
- Match the branch. Compare the Korean or English name, address and telephone number. A different branch may use a different menu or kitchen.
- Record the category and pictograms exactly as shown. Do not upgrade Pork Free to Muslim Friendly or Self-certified to Halal Certified.
- Call if the halal menu needs a reservation. Ask which exact dishes are available at the time of your visit.
- Repeat the important questions when ordering. Staff, ingredients and daily preparation can change after a telephone call.
Show these six questions to restaurant staff
The official VisitKorea Muslim Visitor’s FAQ provides Korean, English and Arabic question prompts. The shorter Korean wording below follows the same six restaurant checks. Point to one line at a time and record whether the answer was yes, no, unclear or not asked.

If certification is claimed, ask which body issued it, the certificate number, the branch and dishes covered, and whether the certificate information is current. Also ask what meat is used in the exact dish. A staff answer can help you make your own decision, but it is not a halal certificate.
Write down the answer instead of remembering a yes
Download the Korean restaurant halal evidence log (CSV). Use one case ID for one branch, one exact dish and one visit, then add a separate row for each listing detail, certificate field or staff answer. This keeps KTO, certifier and restaurant observations from different dates from being blended into one claim. The worksheet records evidence completeness; it does not classify food as halal or haram.

If the answer is unclear or cannot be verified, leave the result as not established. Do not turn “no result,” a language problem or an uncertain staff reply into a halal or non-halal ruling. Before Korea does not certify restaurants.
If the answer changes when you arrive
Use the weakest current evidence, not the most reassuring old answer. A changed menu, unavailable reserved dish, different branch, new supplier or shared fryer answer means your earlier check no longer describes the meal in front of you.
- Ask whether another dish has clearer ingredient and preparation information.
- Keep seafood or vegetarian labels separate from halal evidence; stock, sauce and cookware can still matter.
- If the restaurant cannot confirm a point required by your standard, choose another dish or restaurant without accusing the staff of making a religious ruling.
A sealed package needs a different check
This page is for restaurant dishes. For a ramen cup, sauce, snack or other sealed item, use the exact-package halal evidence check. It matches the market, flavor, size, manufacturer, importer and official record. Use the Korean food label words guide when an ingredient line needs closer reading. Questions that still need your judgment
Does Pork Free mean the restaurant is halal?
No. VisitKorea describes Pork Free as a category without a halal menu where pork is not used and alcohol may be sold. It does not establish the source of other meat, the absence of alcohol in a dish, or separate cookware.
Is Self-certified the same as accredited certification?
No. In the VisitKorea categories, Self-certified is the Muslim restaurant owner’s confirmation that all food is halal. Halal Certified is the separate category that refers to an accredited halal certification body.
Can a staff answer replace a certificate?
No. Staff can explain ingredients and kitchen practice. If certification matters to your decision, ask for the certifying body, number, covered branch or menu and current scope.
What if the restaurant cannot answer one question?
Record the missing field as unclear or not asked, then decide whether to ask a manager, contact the certifying body, or choose an option with clearer evidence. Do not replace the missing answer with an assumption.
