Palace Combination Ticket Won’t Open Every Gate? Check What It Covers

A palace combination ticket is not a universal ticket for every historic building, exhibition or reserved area. The Korea Heritage Service’s admission guide covers Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung’s main grounds, Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung and Jongmyo, with one visit to each within six months of purchase. It excludes Changdeokgung’s Secret Garden. If staff stop you at the Garden entrance, check its separate admission and reservation route; presenting the combination booklet again will not create a Garden place.

Match the destination to the ticket section

Before travelling to the next site, look at the exact name on the ticket and the entrance you plan to use. Ask the ticket office whether that entrance accepts the combination section or needs its own ticket or reservation. At Changdeokgung, distinguish admission to the palace’s main grounds from the Secret Garden visit. The official guide describes separate Garden booking windows and limited availability; check the current official booking screen or ticket office for your visit date instead of treating a printed combination ticket as a reserved time.

If the Garden is sold out, the practical backup is to continue with the main palace visit or choose another covered site that is open and reachable. Check that site’s own hours before changing the itinerary.

If you bought the wrong combination ticket

Keep the whole ticket and receipt while you ask the palace where it was purchased about the current refund procedure. The official admission guide ties a combination-ticket refund to that purchase site and says it is unavailable once any section has been detached. Do not tear out a section just to inspect it, and do not assume a different palace counter or online seller can reverse the sale.

Free-entry categories and separately ticketed areas are different questions. If someone in your group may enter a site free, check that site’s current eligibility and required proof before buying a combination ticket for them. If online Garden booking is unavailable to you, the official guide also lists limited same-day ticket-office sales; ask about remaining places without assuming one will be available. For a visit to Chilgung, use its separate foreigner reservation guide, rather than treating the palace booklet as a reservation there.
