A pharmacy visit in Korea can be quick and helpful, but it becomes harder when you do not know the Korean symptom words, whether you need a prescription, or when the problem is serious enough for a clinic or emergency call.
Use the active ingredient, not only the brand name
Use Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety to find current medicine or public-health information, then speak with a pharmacist or clinic about the individual situation. Brand names can differ while active ingredients and prescription rules matter.

Write down symptoms, allergies, and current medicines
Write the symptom, onset, allergies, medical conditions, current medicines, active ingredient and dose used at home, and a Korean address for the nearest pharmacy or clinic.
- Symptom and urgency
- Medicine name and active ingredient
- Allergies and current medicines
- Nearby open pharmacy or clinic
For minor symptoms, prepare a clear symptom note, allergy information, current medications, and translation app text before visiting a pharmacy. For urgent or severe symptoms, use emergency medical help instead of self-treating.
Use Papago or another translation app, but keep the sentence simple. A pharmacist can help more easily with ‘I have had diarrhea since yesterday. I am allergic to ibuprofen. I am taking X medicine’ than with a long paragraph copied from a forum.
Choose pharmacy, clinic, or emergency care appropriately
- Decide whether the symptom needs emergency care, a clinic, or routine pharmacy advice before searching for a product.
- Show the active ingredient, strength, dose, and original label rather than asking only for a foreign brand name.
- Tell the pharmacist about allergies, pregnancy, chronic conditions, and other medicines before taking a substitute.
- Confirm the dose, timing, side effects, interactions, and whether a Korean prescription is required.
- Escalate to a clinic or emergency service when symptoms are severe, worsening, unexplained, or outside the pharmacist’s scope.
Similar packaging does not prove the medicine is suitable
A suitable medicine decision requires the right active ingredient and dose for the person, not merely a similar package or translated brand name. Written directions should be understood before the first dose.

| Trip detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Urgency | Choose emergency care, a clinic, or pharmacy advice appropriately |
| Active ingredient | Brand names and packaging may differ between countries |
| Individual factors | Allergies, conditions, pregnancy, and other medicines matter |
| Directions | Confirm dose, timing, interactions, and when to seek further care |
For Korea pharmacy and medicine guide for tourists, general information cannot diagnose an illness or confirm that a product is safe with the traveler’s conditions, allergies, and current medicines.
If the medicine name or urgency cannot be resolved
Use a pharmacist, clinic interpreter, hotel assistance, or the official emergency route instead of guessing from an image search or automatic translation.
Keep the original package and obtain medical help promptly for breathing difficulty, severe allergic symptoms, chest pain, loss of consciousness, or another emergency sign.

August 2026 pharmacy decision checkpoint
Use a Korean pharmacy for a pharmacist-level medicine question; use a clinic or hospital when diagnosis, examination, prescription, monitoring, or urgent treatment is needed. A pharmacy search result is not evidence that a store is still open or that it stocks a particular ingredient. A translation app is not a dosing decision.
| Need | First route | Stop and escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| An open pharmacy now | Official E-Gen pharmacy search plus a direct phone call | Hours cannot be confirmed, the counter is inaccessible, or symptoms are worsening |
| A Korean equivalent | Show the exact active ingredient, strength, dosage form and original package to a pharmacist | The ingredient is unavailable, prescription status differs, or substitution is uncertain |
| A diagnosis or prescription | Clinic or hospital | Do not ask a shop clerk or app to choose treatment |
| Breathing difficulty, collapse, severe chest pain, major bleeding or rapidly worsening reaction | 119 emergency medical route | Do not continue comparing pharmacy listings |
Use E-Gen as a live lead, then call
The National Emergency Medical Center E-Gen search provides current-area hospital and pharmacy leads and tells users to confirm operating hours by phone. Copy the Korean pharmacy name, road address and telephone number, then ask whether it is open now and whether a pharmacist can check the exact active ingredient. Building access, holidays, staffing and stock can differ from a listing.
- Choose the current province, city and district or allow location access.
- Filter for 약국 (pharmacy) and current operation when the option appears.
- Call the listed number before traveling, especially at night or on a holiday.
- Confirm the entrance and final walking route in a Korean map app.
- If the medicine question requires diagnosis or a prescription, switch to a clinic or hospital search.
Bring the medicine facts a pharmacist can verify
| Fact | Show | Why brand name alone fails |
|---|---|---|
| Active ingredient | Generic name and original label | The same brand may contain a different formulation by country |
| Strength and form | mg per tablet, liquid concentration, cream, inhaler or injection | A similar package can have a different dose or route |
| Current use | Dose, frequency and time of last dose | Duplicate ingredients can be hidden across products |
| Safety context | Allergies, pregnancy, age, diagnoses and other medicines | Suitability depends on the individual |
| Prescription evidence | Original prescription or clinician note when available | Availability does not decide whether a prescription is required |
Use the MFDS integrated search portal to confirm product and regulatory information where available, then let the Korean pharmacist or clinician interpret it for the individual. Do not transfer one traveler’s recommendation to another person.
Check the package before leaving the counter
- Read the active ingredient and strength back to the pharmacist.
- Confirm how much, how often, how long, and whether food affects use.
- Ask about duplication or interactions with current medicines and supplements.
- Ask which symptoms require stopping the medicine or seeking urgent care.
- Keep the labeled package, receipt, written directions and pharmacy phone number.
Know when the pharmacy route has failed
Call 119 for a medical emergency. Seek a clinic or hospital when symptoms need examination, continue to worsen, involve a high-risk traveler, or require a prescription or monitoring. The official VISITKOREA emergency page lists 119 for medical emergencies. Tourism interpretation can help with communication, but it does not diagnose or approve medicine use.
Current source record
Checked August 24, 2026: E-Gen open hospital/pharmacy search and its call-first warning, MFDS medicine search, and the official 119 medical-emergency route. Pharmacy hours, stock, product names and prescription status can change; verify the exact store and medicine at the time of need.
